Sports Therapy
The focus and goal of sports therapy and rehabilitation treatment is to restore optimal motion/movement of the affected joint(s), pain reduction and setting the foundation for a more injury resilient joint and body. Your return to play, activity or work will be achieved by incorporating multiple therapy modalities such as myofascial release techniques, custom corrective and strengthening exercises, joint manipulation, electroacupuncture and dry-needling.
Myofascial Release Techniques
One of the most common treatments for athletes is myofascial release. This hands-on soft tissue treatment allows practitioners to diagnosis and treat soft-tissue injuries often found in sports and athletic injuries. Myofascial release combines specific patient movement and precisely directed tension to break down pain-generating soft tissue adhesions (scar tissue) causing abnormal movement patterns and pain. Scar tissue is a by-product of a soft tissue injury either through a single event (acute) or repetitive motion injury. In an acute injury such as pulls, tears, or collisions, the soft tissue is stressed beyond its physiological limits and a tear of the soft tissue occurs. This tear/injury initiates the inflammation repair process and scar tissue is formed. Myofascial release is designed to accomplish three unique objectives:
- Restore motion of all soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerve).
- Re-establish optimal texture, resistance and function of all soft tissues.
- Release entrapped nerves, blood vessels and lymphatics.
Custom Corrective And Strengthening Exercises
By creating a custom physical rehabilitation program that will generally consist of range of motion, stretching and strengthening exercises will address major areas of pain, injury and, physical deficiencies/imbalances. Specific exercises will complement the manual treatment received and help prolong the effectiveness of the manual therapy and help patients recover quickly and more effectively.
- Range of motion of exercises are intended to maintain and potentially create more motion at the joint.
- Stretching exercises will lengthen shortened muscles that may be inhibiting the motion of the joint causing pain.
- Additional strengthening exercises are designed to strengthen the joints new found movement, strengthening the tendons, ligaments and the musculature surrounding the joint.
Joint Manipulation
Joint manipulation is a treatment focusing solely on assisting the restoration of proper joint movement.
